6 Car Accident Statistics that Show the Dangers of Driving in California

Sun, beaches, business, laid back vibes - California has it all and these are just some of the few reasons why the Golden State is the most highly populated in the country; however, while California is a wonderful state to live in, the state’s driving safety rates are some of the country’s worst. According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) Fatality Facts 2018 report, California ranks as the state with the highest number of car accidents and highest number of fatalities resulting from car accidents in the country. The state’s high population comes paired with a high number of drivers on the road, which in turn correlates with the high car accident rates throughout the state. Below, our excellent team of car accident attorneys from West Coast Trial Lawyers break down more California car accident statistics based off of the latest California Highway Patrol Report so you can be well informed about driver’s safety in the Golden State.

Statistics from the Latest California Highway Patrol Report (2017)

  • 197,146 fatal and injury traffic crashes occurred throughout the state in 2017 -  3,582 of which were fatal and 193,564 which resulted in injury. “On average, 1 out of every 10,200 persons living in California was killed in a traffic crash; 1 out of every 143 persons was injured; and 1 out of every 73 licensed drivers was involved in a fatal or injury traffic crash.”
  • 3,904 people died in the 3,582 fatal crashes. 2,089 of those people were drivers, 690 were passengers of vehicles, 963 were pedestrians, and 162 were bicyclists. “This is an average of 1.1 deaths per fatal crash.” However we see from this data here that the people who are most in danger from vehicle collisions are drivers while the least in danger are bicyclists, despite the stigma around the danger of bike riding that exists. According to the data, in California, you are more likely to die as a driver in a car crash than as a bicyclist in a vehicle collision.
  • 36,037 of the accidents in California occurred in Los Angeles. Los Angeles is the largest city in the state with about 4 million people. The city of angels is notorious for it’s heavy traffic condition, long commutes, and aggressive drivers. It comes to no shock to know that vehicle collisions commonly occur in the big city.
  • Every 3 minutes, a car accident was reported in California. This means that on average, there were 20 accidents reported an hour in 2017. However, this number does not resemble the true number of accidents that occurred as there are many instances when car crashes go unreported to the police and to insurance companies.
  • For 2017 in California, speeding was the leading cause of car accidents, accounting for 32 percent of the accidents that caused injury and death. Speeding is an extremely dangerous form of aggressive driving that can have dire consequences. Since Los Angeles is often congested with traffic, whenever angelenos can, they take a chance to drive as fast as they can to get off the road sooner, rather than later. However, studies show that
  • There was a 1.13 Mileage Death Rate in 2017. This means that a little more than each mile in California, a person died as a result of a vehicle collision, which is astonishing to think about.

Is California Too Dangerous to Live In Because of These Statistics?

California is a beautiful state with so much to offer to its inhabitants. However, California traffic and accident rates are enough to have drivers who are thinking of coming to live in the Golden State think twice before making the big move. Don’t let these statistics scare you though, California would love to have you. If you’re living in California or plan on moving to the Golden State, be sure to make safe driving a priority. The safety of California’s roads depends on the safety initiatives taken by the state’s drivers.

Available Damages for Injuries Sustained From a Car Crash

A car accident lawyer can ensure that you are compensated for all of the damages you are eligible for by helping you each step of the way. The following are the available damages for injuries sustained in an accident:

Economic Damages

Economic damages are intended to compensate a plaintiff for monetary losses. They are calculated by determining the amount of out of pocket losses an aggrieved individual has or will expect to incur as a result of the injuries that were sustained in an accident.

A few examples of economic losses include:

  • Loss of Earning Capacity
  • Medical Bills
  • Lost Wages

Non-Economic Damages

Non-economic damages are intended to cover losses that are thought of as subjective. Non-economic damages may include compensation for:

  • Emotional Distress
  • Pain and Suffering
  • Loss of Enjoyment of Life

Punitive Damages

The third type of damages a California court may award are known as punitive damages. Punitive damages are intended as punishment and are only awarded when a defendant’s behavior is especially harmful. Punitive damages are relatively rare and in fact are only incorporated in about 5% of all verdicts. Furthermore, there is no real set standard for calculating and awarding punitive damages. Punitive damages are awarded at the court’s discretion and will vary depending on the specific circumstances of a case.
