What you need to know about Rideshare Insurance

Rideshare services such as Uber and Lyft have become extremely popular transportation alternatives and have revolutionized the way people get around. However, many Uber and Lyft drivers are not aware of the coverage that is needed while using these popular rideshare apps. For instance, there are a few things that rideshare drivers should consider:
1) When it comes to insurance policies, make sure you know what is covered within your personal auto insurance policy and the rideshare company’s auto insurance policy.
2) Not all rideshare companies offer insurance policies, therefore, it is important to check whether or not you are eligible within your own.
3) Rideshare insurance policies are not available in all states, which will result in having to obtain a commercial auto policy.
4) Rideshare coverage varies depending on the different phases of the job. There are three different phases for Uber and Lyft drivers, refer to our ridesharing insurance breakdown for more information.

As a driver for any rideshare service, it is unlikely that your personal auto insurance policy will cover any expenses as an Uber or Lyft driver. Let your current insurer know that you are a driver for a rideshare service. If some insurance companies find out that you are a driver for a rideshare service without letting them know beforehand, they might cancel your personal policy.

If the rideshare company you’re driving for offers coverage, take a close look at the gaps between the rideshare policy and your personal policy. Rideshare companies such as Uber and Lyft provide at least $1 million in liability coverage depending on what phase you’re in.

Obtaining commercial insurance to fill in the gaps is always an option; however, commercial insurance can be very pricey.

If you’re in an accident:

If you are in a car accident as an Uber or Lyft driver, either your personal insurance company or your rideshare service insurance will cover the expenses of the accident depending on the phase you’re in:

Period 1: The driver is offline. When the driver is offline and the Uber or Lyft driver is in an accident, the driver is only covered by his or her personal insurance policy. If you’re not logged in on Uber or Lyft, you are considered to be off the job, which is why you are only covered by your personal insurance policy.

Period 2: The driver is online and awaiting a fare. If you’re in Period 2 as an Uber or Lyft driver, your ridesharing service’s insurance policy is active. If you are in an accident during Period 2, you have 50/100/25 liability coverage. In other words, you have $50,000 per person, $100,000 per accident for bodily injury, and $25,000 for property damage, which will be covered by Uber and Lyft insurance policies.

Period 3: The driver has accepted a fare and is either en route to the customer or has already picked them up and are en route to the destination. During Period 3, the time between receiving a ride request and dropping off the passenger(s) at their destination, both Uber and Lyft offer $1 million in liability, uninsured, and underinsured coverage, along with differing comprehensive and collision coverages.

What to do after you’ve been in an Uber or Lyft accident:

Call the police: Even if no one appears to be injured and you believe the damages are minor, you should call the police so they can make an official report of the accident.

Exchange information with other drivers: Make sure you get the names, addresses, phone numbers, driver’s license numbers, and insurance information for all parties involved. Take pictures or write down the make, model, year, color, and license plate numbers of the vehicles involved.

Be careful what you say: While you may be upset, it is important to watch what you say after a car accident. You should never apologize for the accident. Statements you make at the scene of an accident can be used against you and may hurt your case later on.
