Because of the circumstances brought by the coronavirus pandemic, the Girl Scouts of California’s Central Coast are reportedly kicking off their 2021 Girl Scout Cookie season with a new contact-free pickup and delivery orders national collaboration with the food delivery giant Grubhub. The company is partnering with 100 of the 111 Girl Scout councils in the country to deliver cookies through the app.
The cookie drive promotes financial literacy for the scouts and teaches them modern business skills. So when the COVID-19 pandemic hit in the middle of the 2020 season, the girl scouts were faced with the same challenges as other small businesses and had to quickly pivot their sales methods. That’s why for this season, consumers in the Central Coast can order girl scout cookies for pickup or delivery through Grubhub’s website or app. Local girl scouts will then track and fulfill orders, manage inventory, and more, all using Grubhub’s back-end technology.
In a statement, interim GSUSA CEO Judith Batty said: “We’re proud of the resourceful ways Girl Scouts are running their cookie businesses safely and using their earnings to make the world a better place.” She further explained how pandemic-related restrictions on in-person cookie sales have helped the girls develop their entrepreneurial skills. Batty said they’ve had to “use innovative sales tactics, and pivot to new ways of doing business when things don’t go according to plan.”
Since the cookie drive is about raising money for youth to take trips, earn badges, and gain life skills — and because the company has been often slammed by restaurants for charging them too high a fee to serve customers, — Grubhub has waived all fees for sales without reducing proceeds for troops and councils. This year, Girl Scout Cookie season runs from Jan. 13 through March 14. Deliveries will be made between 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. daily, directly to the consumers’ door.
In a press release quoted by CBS News, the organization reportedly said: “GSUSA is grateful to Grubhub for waiving all fees for the organization to make this new delivery option feasible for sales without reducing troops’ and councils’ proceeds.”
The app’s cookie finder site can be used to find out where you can get Girl Scout cookies delivered. As reported by Life Hacker, if you can’t find cookies in your area through GrubHub, this may mean the drive has yet to begin in your city or town.
The Girl Scouts sell roughly 200 million packages of cookies — nearly $800 million worth — during each cookie season.
