A Police Officer has been declared dead in Northern California, after he conducted a traffic stop. The stop turned violent, resulting in a shootout and the officer’s death. 30-year-old Jorge David Alvarado was an officer for the Salinas Police Department. He had served in the department for 5 years.
He stopped a man with a traffic violation at approximately 10:45 p.m. on Friday night, near Market Street and Griffin Street. The stop resulted in an exchange of gunfire between the officer and the man Alvarado stopped.
According to AP News, the suspect responsible for the officer’s death has been arrested, referring to a statement from police department spokesperson Miguel Cabrera.
At a Saturday news conference, Police Chief Roberto Filice claimed that Alvarado’s action within the confrontation aided in the arrest of the suspect. However, Filice provided no other details on either the suspect or the leadup to the shootout.
“The officer stayed in the fight all the way to the end. Ultimately, he paid the price for it. He gave his life for it,” stated Filice, “The police department lost a son but the community lost a hero.”
Salinas’ Mayor Kimbley Craig claims that Alvarado’s death is the first in almost 80 years to involve a police officer in the line of duty. The city is 100 miles south of San Francisco. “Our community and our police department are devastated,” Craig states.
Additionally, Craig has requested that residents show support to the city’s officers, “They are hurting, and they need to know our community supports them.”
The Monterey County District Attorney’s Office has now opened an investigation, as the incident involved an officer who fired their weapon. However, the DA states that there will be no further details released until the investigation closes.
ABC10 notes that Governor Gavin Newsom has taken notice of Alvarado’s death. On Sunday, the Governor ordered flags at the state capitol to fly at half-staff in order to honor the officer.
“Our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with Officer Jorge Alvarado’s family, friends, coworkers and the community of Salinas as they mourn his loss in a senseless act of violence,” Newsom said in his statement. “Officer Alvarado died a hero and his selfless sacrifice while protecting the community he served will always be remembered.”
The statement also relays that Alvarado is survived by his fiance and his mother.
