This Tuesday, 56-year-old Savaii Seau and two others got into a head-on collision car accident. The 56-year-old is the brother of Junior Seau, a player for the San Diego Chargers. Seau died, while his passenger and the other driver are being treated for minor and moderate injuries.
At approximately 2:10 p.m, Seau’s car drifted from the northbound lane and into the southbound lane of Los Coches Road, near Lakeview Road in the Glenview area.
The cause of the incident is still under investigation, and it is unknown if substances were involved. It is believed that both survivors of the crash were wearing seatbelts, while Seau was not.
Why Seau’s 2005 Audi A6 Sedan drifted is unknown. According to CBS 8, the big rig was a Helix Water District dump truck being driven by a 60-year-old male. This was noted as a 2006 International 4400 dump truck, and it had only just turned from Lakeview Road.
After the crash, as noted by the San Diego Union Tribune, Seau was transported to Sharp Memorial Hospital in San Diego by paramedics. He was pronounced dead upon arrival at the trauma center.
The name of the other motorist remains withheld, pending family notification. Regardless, both the trucker and Seau’s 42-year-old female passenger were taken to hospitals for treatment to their minor to moderately severe injuries.
The incident has since been met with grief from the community Savaii Seau left behind. Family claims that Savaii was three years older than his brother. They also told 10 News that he was a youth sports coach, trainer, and an artist.
He was an educator and coach at Warren-Walker School in San Diego, coaching flag football and track at the middle school. According to the school’s headmaster, Raymond J. Volker, he was also an artist who taught art during the summer for the school. Savaii Seau even has murals at some of the Warren-Walker campuses.
“The hearts of the entire Warren-Walker School community are heavy as we have lost a great human being, teacher and friend today,” Volker says, “A fatal car accident has claimed our beloved Coach Seau, who rained love on all of his students, was a bright light in our WWS family, and loved by all. His inspiration, support and incredibly unselfish spirit will be missed by his family as well, and to whom we extend our deepest condolences.”
His statement continues: “A man whose large physical presence was secondary to the size of his heart; a heart that was measured in the joy he brought to the students he touched each day in his physical education classes. To see him move his large frame in perfect rhythm to a favorite song, along with the youngest of his students, was a sight to behold.
“They, along with students of all ages, referred to him as ‘Coachee’ – not only an endearing address – but one filled with deep respect and love. Savaii Seau will be missed, not just today, but for years to come. To have touched so many in such a positive way will not easily be forgotten.”
