On Monday afternoon, a driver was struck and wounded by gunfire in the San Diego area. This apparently took place in a road rage altercation, on Interstate 805 in the Lincoln Park area, near the 43rd Street offramp.
Officers had responded after receiving a call from the victim just before 3:30 p.m. The exact time that the incident took place has not been publicly released.
According to Investigators and Fox 5 San Diego, the victim is a male driver in a white Toyota 4Runner. The victim was shot at three times, and at least one of these bullets hit him in his left thigh.
The victim was shot at by a male passenger in a gray sedan. The sedan was being driven by a woman. Apparently, the gray sedan fled the area and went southbound on I-805. Authorities released no further physical descriptions of the driver, passenger, or sedan.
According to California Highway Patrol Officer Salvador Castro, the man was transported to a hospital in the area and treated for “non-critical injuries.” CBS8 notes that the victim was transported to Mercy Hospital, specifically.
Castro advises that anyone who is in a similar situation collect information with caution. You can attempt to get a license plate number, but “Don’t stop. Keep going. Get to a safe location. Contact 9-1-1 immediately. Don’t engage with the other person. You never know what that person may have. As we see in this incident, there was somebody with a gun.”
NBC7 San Diego has reported that the victim’s 1-year-old daughter was also in the car at the time of the incident. Luckily, she got out of the incident unharmed.
Officers are continuing to investigate the incident.
Anyone who witnessed the event is urged to contact CHP’s San Diego Special Investigations Unit at (858)293-6000.
