An unnamed suspect was seen attempting a carjacking in the Norwalk area on Thursday night. The suspect was wanted for both attempts at carjacking and assault with a deadly weapon. When authorities found that the suspect would not cooperate, going so far as to break into and hide in a person’s home, police shot at and wounded the suspect.
The shooting took place at around 7 p.m. in the 12000 block of Roster Road.
In the same neighborhood, a second man was found to have been beaten to death. This man is noted to have been 67-years-old and lying in the yard of the home. While he was not identified, he was pronounced dead from upper torso trauma. The suspect in his death is still unknown.
The suspect was finally arrested early Friday morning. According to CBS Los Angeles, the arrest was carried through only after a six-hour standoff.
When police first attempted to bring the suspect into custody, he was seen walking in the area. The suspect then took out a gun while a deputy attempted to detain him. This prompted multiple officers to open fire while the suspect attempted to run away.
He then broke into a home. The residents of the house were inside at the time of the break in, but were able to get out safely. Press Telegram explains that the residents did not know the suspect, and that they left their home when the intruder entered.
In addition, nearby homes were evacuated and a SWAT team was called in. It was at this point that the stand off took place.
By 1:30 a.m. Friday morning, police were able to force their way into the home. There, they found the suspect had taken a number of gunshot wounds to his upper torso. KTLA reports that the suspect was also hit “once in the lower extremities,” as described by the department.
After being apprehended, the suspect was taken to a hospital, where he has been reported to be in stable condition.
No deputies were harmed during the encounter, and there is presently no information regarding whether the suspect opened fire upon police. Additionally, it’s unknown if the suspect is responsible for the death of the man who had been found in the yard.
