Personal Injury Firm
Historically, California is known for its terrible traffic congestion, traffic accidents and unfortunate road fatalities. Reports suggest that in 2018, there was a slight increase in traffic-related deaths in California which claimed over 3,600 lives. We at West Coast Trial Lawyers understand how traffic-related accidents can affect a victim’s life and so does Vision Zero.
Vision Zero is a non-profit organization that originated in Sweden in 1997. Vision Zero was formulated with the intention of diminishing all traffic-related accidents by a percentage each year until the number is reduced to zero. According to Vision Zero’s Action Plan for Los Angeles, the goal is to eliminate all traffic-related injuries by 2035. The plan will achieve its goals by remodeling streets, changing signage and ultimately educating the public on general road safety.
Vision Zero believes that all traffic accidents are preventable. To help enforce their vision, they have come up with the following strategies:
The Action Plan will explain the strategies the city will take to diminish fatalities by 20 percent by the end of each year with the eventual goal of wiping out all traffic-related deaths. The Action Plan will focus on the most fatal areas of Los Angeles, mainly the ones listed on the City’s High-Injury Network. Another goal of the Action Plan is to increase the amount of aid allocated to older adults and children who have suffered fatal or severe injuries due to a traffic accident or collision.
The Action Plan tackles many projects and has witnessed positive results. An example is the introduction of a scramble crosswalk at the intersection of Hollywood and Highland in November of 2015. Since then, there have been zero deaths and serious injuries in that area. In addition, the Action Plan has installed 22 pedestrian intervals which reduced vehicle collisions with pedestrians by about 60%.
