Ten Students Injured In Inglewood School Bus Accident By Van Ness Avenue and Manchester Avenue In Los Angeles

INGLEWOOD, CALIFORNIA (September 26, 2019) – At least ten children were injured in a school bus accident by the intersection of Van Ness Avenue and Manchester Avenue.

Los Angeles firefighters are saying that 56 children were on the school bus at the time of the accident. The collision took place around 7:30 p.m. and numerous parents rushed to the scene in order to be with their children.

The children on the bus ranged in age from 8 to 10-years-old. A photo of the scene of the accident shows one car with major front end damage.

There is still no word yet on what may have caused the bus accident.

Liability In School Bus Accidents

School buses are considered “common carriers” under the law. Their drivers are therefore held to a very high standard in terms of safety. According to Squaw Valley Ski Corporation v. Superior Court, The elevated standard of care for common carriers is “based on a recognition that the privilege of serving the public as a common carrier necessarily entails great responsibility, requiring common carriers to exercise a high duty of care towards their customers.” There are a number of contributing factors for bus accidents including:

  • Fatigue
  • Driver intoxication
  • Inclement weather
  • Driver distraction

When a school bus driver is negligent and causes an accident the school district that they work for may be held at fault. Generally speaking, school districts are liable for the negligent conduct of their employees – insofar as those employees were working within the course and scope of their employment. It’s important that evidence is preserved after an accident.

Any person that is injured in a school bus may have legal recourse through a bodily injury claim. Damages in a civil claim can help cover lost wages, medical bills and pain and suffering. Victims of bus accidents will often not realize the full extent of their injuries until several months later. A bus accident attorney can examine all of the facts of your case and let you know what your rights are.
