Sun-Shawn Hill Fairfield: 21-Year-Old Sun-Shawn Hill From Suisun City Died In Car Accident After Being Rear Ended By White Mercedes Service Van
FAIRFLIEND, CALIFORNIA (May 13, 2019) – A 21-year-old man identified as Sun-Shawn Hill has tragically died in a car accident on Highway 12 not far from Beck Avenue.
California Highway Patrol are saying that the accident took place around 3:20 p.m. during peak traffic. Four vehicles were stopped at a red light when a white Mercedes service van hit them from behind.
Sun-Shawn Hill was in a Volkswagen Passat which was pushed into a Hyundai. The Hyundai then hit a BMW 325CI which then rear ended an Audi A3. Firefighters and paramedics rushed to the scene in order to help the victims.
Sun-Shawn Hill was pronounced dead at the scene despite life-saving efforts. Three other victims identified as Olayinka Akanji, Derek Phillips and Asha Riley all suffered injuries from the crash.
The driver of the Mercedes service van was also injured. Fairfield police and the California Highway Patrol are asking anyone with information about the accident to come forward.
Causes Of Car Accidents
According to the Association For Safe International Road Travel, “Road crashes are the leading cause of death among young people ages 15-29, and the second leading cause of death worldwide among young people ages 5-14.” There are a number of factors positively associated with car accidents including:
- Drug and Alcohol Use: What many drivers don’t realize is that prescription and over the counter medications can be just as dangerous as alcohol. It’s important to ask your doctor about how any medication could potentially affect your ability to drive.
- Inattention: Distractions are all around us. Our smartphones not only make getting information easier. But they also dramatically increase the likelihood of car accidents. GPS use in cars is also another major problem. Most GPS systems are designed not to function while a car is in use, but this can easily be overridden.
- Speeding: Every driver as a legal responsibility to maintain a safe speed and look out for what’s ahead of them. Drivers should have sufficient distance between the vehicle ahead of them so that they can slow down even if the lead vehicle stops abruptly.
Car accidents can leave victims with serious and life-long injuries including spinal cord trauma, head injuries, broken bones, internal trauma and death. In many situations, a victim may not even realize the full extent of their injuries until several months after an accident. Depending on a number of factors, there may be multiple forms of liability following a car accident.
Liability In Rear End Car Accidents
Rear-end collisions typically take place when one driver is distracted or traveling too fast for the prevailing conditions. According to California Vehicle Code 22350, “No person shall drive a vehicle upon a highway at a speed greater than is reasonable or prudent having due regard for weather, visibility, the traffic on, and the surface and width of, the highway, and in no event at a speed which endangers the safety of persons or property.” There is simply no excuse for a rear end collision.
Any person that causes an accident by hitting another vehicle from behind may likely face civil liability. If the driver was working at the time of an accident, their employer may face liability as well. Companies are typically held responsible for the negligent conduct of their employees, insofar as those employees were working within the course and scope of their job duties.
Any person that is injured in a car accident due to the negligence of another driver may be able to recover damages for lost wages, medical bills and pain and suffering. This extends to the family members of any person who died in an accident. They may be able to seek justice through California Code of Civil Procedure 377.60. A wrongful death attorney can examine all of the unique facts of your case and let you know what your options are. There are statute of limitations associated with pursing a claim, so it’s important to be proactive.
