Liability In Tanker Truck Accidents

Tanker trucks are specifically designed to carry tens of thousands of pounds of gasoline or petrol. A fully loaded tanker truck can carry as much as  80,000 lbs. They can be particularly difficult to drive due to their high center of gravity. This is why it is so important for truck drivers to receive proper training. Here are just a few of the most common causes of truck accidents according to the FMCSA:

  • Brake problems
  • Prescription drug use
  • Traveling too fast for conditions
  • Unfamiliarity with roadway
  • Roadway problems
  • Over-the-counter drug use
  • Inadequate surveillance
  • Fatigue

Fishtailing can occur when a truck’s tires loose friction on the road either to dirt, sand, gravel, rain snow or ice. Fishtailing is more likely to occur when trucks or other vehicles are moving quickly. Truck drivers should reduce their speed during inclement weather in order to prevent accidents. Victims of truck accidents often suffer from a wide variety of injuries including:

  • Head injuries
  • Burn injuries
  • Back injuries
  • Broken bones
  • Psychological injuries

Victims of tanker truck accidents may have legal recourse through a bodily injury claim. Damages in a civil claim can help cover lost wages, medical bills, and pain and suffering. It’s important to continue to seek follow up care after an accident and to document your injuries. A truck accident attorney can evaluate all of the facts of your case and let you know what your legal options are.
