San Francisco Balcony Collapse Accident Seriously Injured Two Women At 2020 Lawton Street
SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA (October 28, 2018) Two women were seriously injured in an accident when the balcony on a third-floor single family home collapsed at 2020 Lawton Street in the Outer Sunset District.
The accident happened in the early morning hours at a house party. PG&E arrived at the scene in order to attend to service wires that had to be taken down after the balcony fell.
San Francisco firefighters rushed to the scene of the balcony collapse in order to treat the two women for injuries. They were taken to the San Francisco General Hospital in serious condition.
The Department of Buildings is saying that the balcony collapsed due to dry rot and rusted bolts.
The conditions of the San Francisco Balcony Collapse bear a number of similarities to the 2015 Berkeley balcony collapse that left 6 people dead. The accident happened during a birthday party and five of the people that died were from Ireland. Officials blamed that collapse on dry rot.
Liability In Balcony Collapses
Balcony collapses usually take place when a balcony on a home or a business is in disrepair. If the balcony is exposed to the elements, support bolts will rust over time and lose their structural integrity. Dry rot may occur when certain species of fungi come in contact with the wood. These fungi consume the portions of the wood that gives it strength. Victims of balcony collapse accidents typically suffer from a number of different trauma including spinal cord injuries, broken bones, brain injuries and lacerations.
There are a number of different entities that could potentially face civil liability for the San Francisco balcony collapse that injured these two women. Building contractors may face liability for negligent use of inferior materials or faulty construction techniques. Commercial property owners may face civil liability for failing to keep their premises in a reasonably safe condition. There are a number of specific facts that need to be considered for an accident – including the status of the people that were injured. Guests and business patrons are generally entitled to a greater level of care than trespassers.
