Norman Tanner Accident: Victim Died In Car Accident After Driver of Toyota Ran Red Light In San Francisco By Baker Street

SAN FRANCISCO (October 23, 2018) A 60-year-old man identified as Norman Tanner has died after a hit-and-run accident in San Francisco’s  Haight-Ashbury neighborhood by Baker Street.

San Francisco police are saying that the accident took place around 9:10 p.m. The driver of a toyota prius ran a red light and hit Norman Tanner as he was crossing the street.

The woman who was driving the Toyota prius stopped the car briefly after hitting the victim before taking off. Firefighters and paramedics rushed to the scene of the hit-and-run collision in order to treat the victim for life-threatening injuries.

Tragically, Norman Tanner later died due to his injuries at the hospital. Investigators are saying that the Toyota Prius that hit the victim was either black or dark blue. The prius likely has damage to its front end.

If you have information which could help police locate the driver you are encouraged to call the SFPD’s tip line at (415) 575-4444. All calls remain anonymous.

Growing Trend Of Hit-And-Run Accidents

According to one study, hit-and-run accidents are at an all time high. There has been a 60% spike between 2009 – 2016. New Hampshire has the lowest number of hit-and-runs per capita while New Mexico had the highest. Researchers have proposed a number of theories to help explain this trend. In general, people are simply more distracted than they have been in the past. Smartphones and GPS use remain high and are a leading contributor to hit-and-run accidents. Alcohol use has also played a significant role. Victims of hit-and-run accidents often have traumatic injuries and may need to take time off work. A pedestrian accident attorney can take steps to help get victims or their family compensation after an accident for lost wages medical bills and pain and suffering.

Liability In Pedestrian Accidents

Drivers have a common law responsibility to operate their vehicles in a reasonably safe manner and to take steps to avoid accidents. Most pedestrian accidents happen between 6:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. It is especially important to be vigilant. Pedestrians are relatively small and may wear dark clothing. If a driver is distracted and hits another pedestrian they may face civil liability for what happened. If a person takes off after an accident they may also face criminal penalties. It is a felony to leave the scene of an accident in California that causes bodily injury. Even if a negligent driver does not have car insurance, a victim or their family may have the ability to recover damages under Proposition 213.
