Nancy Haywood Visalia (Alonzo Prado Visalia): Nancy Haywood, Alonzo Prado Injured In Lamborghini DUI Car Accident In Visalia By The Intersection of Walnut Avenue and Court Street
VISALIA, CALIFORNIA (June 16, 2019) – A 32-year-old woman from Exeter identified as Nancy Haywood and a 23-year-old man from Visalia identified as Alonzo Prado were both injured in a car accident with an allegedly intoxicated Lamborghini driver.
Visalia police are saying that the accident took place on Saturday around 11:30 p.m. by the intersection of Walnut Avenue and Court Street. Police were attempting to pull over the Lamborghini when it took off at a high rate of speed.
A few moments later it collided with a Lincoln MKZ being driven by Nancy Haywood and a Toyota Camry driven by Alonzo Prado. Firefighters and paramedics rushed to the scene.
Nancy Haywood was injured in the crash. But the Toyota carrying Alonzo Prado and an 18-year-old woman took a more direct impact.
The 18-year-old passenger in the Camry was severely injured and later died due to her injuries at the hospital. Police are planning on arresting the Lamborghini driver on felony DUI and manslaughter once he is released from the hospital.
The Dangers of Driving While Intoxicated
According to the Centers For Disease Control, “In 2016, more than 1 million drivers were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol or narcotics.3 That’s one percent of the 111 million self-reported episodes of alcohol-impaired driving among U.S. adults each year. Drugs other than alcohol (legal and illegal) are involved in about 16% of motor vehicle crashes.” More than 25% of all fatal accidents involve an intoxicated driver.
There is simply no excuse to drink and drive. It’s dangerous and stupid. The problem is that people will do it once, twice and then multiple times. They’ll build up confidence in their ability and then just assume that drinking and driving isn’t a bid deal. But it is a big deal. Depending on the facts of any case, any driver that causes an accident while under the influence may face civil as well as criminal liability.
Liability In DUI Accidents
It is illegal to flee a police officer that is attempting to pull you over. According to California Vehicle Code 2800.1, “(a) Any person who, while operating a motor vehicle and with the intent to evade, willfully flees or otherwise attempts to elude a pursuing peace officer’s motor vehicle, is guilty of a misdemeanor punishable by imprisonment in a county jail for not more than one year if all of the following conditions exist.” It is a felony to cause an accident while under the influence of alcohol.
It doesn’t matter if a driver was high of drugs or over the counter medications. Any person that is injured in an accident with a DUI driver may have legal recourse through a bodily injury claim. Damages can include compensation for medical bills, lost wages and pain and suffering. There are also laws protecting the family of any person that died in an accident. Family members may be able to pursue damages through California Code of Civil Procedure 377.60. A wrongful death attorney can examine all of the facts of your case and let you know what your legal options are.
