Lugonia Elementary and Clement Middle school Crossing Guard Leonard Ortiz “Bam Bam” Killed In Hit-And-Run Car Accident By Orange Street and Pennsylvania Avenue In Redlands
REDLANDS, CALIFORNIA (October 26, 2018) A 48-year-old school crossing guard identified as Leonard Ortiz was tragically killed in a hit-and-run accident while riding his scooter on his way to work.
The school crossing guard had worked more than a decade for Lugonia Elementary and Clement Middle school. He was beloved and affectionately known as “Bam Bam”.
A memorial was created by Orange Street and Pennsylvania Avenue in order to honor Leonard Ortiz. A video of the suspects car has been released by the Redlands Police.
Investigators believe than an SUV may have been involved in the hit-and-run. It is being described as a gray or silver 2003-2009 Toyota Sequoia (or at least an SUV that is similar in build).
The death of Leonard Ortiz has shaken the community and was mentioned at a Redlands City Council meeting. “Father, we ask that you extend your comforting embrace to the family of Leonard Ortiz, a crossing guard at Lugonia Elementary School, killed today in a very tragic accident,” said Mayor Paul Foster.
A Go Fund Me page has been set up for the victim’s family in order to help with funeral expenses. Police are asking anyone that may have knowledge of the crash to come forward and call 909-798-7681.
