PETALUMA, CALIFORNIA (October 11, 2018) A man identified as John Mello was tragically killed in a car accident when the driver of a Ford van drifted into his lane on Bodega Avenue.

California Highway Patrol are saying that the driver of the Ford van crossed the centerline on Bodega Avenue and hit the GMC pickup that  John Mello was driving. The car accident took place around 10:25 a.m. according to investigators.

The driver of the Ford van was also killed along with one of the two dogs that was in the van. Police do not believe that drugs or alcohol were a factor in the crash.

A picture of the crash scene shows major damage to both the van and the pickup truck. Officers closed down the road for some time in order to determine what happened.

An investigation into the deadly Petaluma crash remains ongoing at this time.

What To Investigate After A Car Accident

It has been estimated that car accidents kill 35,000 people every year. It is very important that police look into all of the various factors that may have led to the crash that killed John Mello. Evidence should be gathered and preserved in a timely manner. Here are just a few of the factors that should be investigated:

  • The location of the accident is very important. Has there been a history of similar accidents at this spot? Often times, defects in a roadway may contribute to a crash. This may become evident if similar crashes keep happening over and over again.

  • The vehicles that were involved is another important aspect. Cars are machines and like every other machine they don’t always function properly.

  • The condition of the drivers and their action are relevant. Alcohol contributes to around 25% of fatal crashes. Speeding and distractions are also major contributing factors. There are even devices now that can detect whether a driver was texting or using their cell phone before a crash.

Car crashes can leave victims with debilitating injuries and often result in death. Victims may not know where to begin. A Los Angeles car accident attorney can conduct a thorough examination of your case and make sure that key pieces of evidence are being preserved.

Liability In Car Accidents

Police will need to examine a number of pieces of evidence in order to determine liability in the fatal crash that killed John Mello. Drivers have a responsibility to operate their vehicles in a reasonably safe manner and take steps to avoid accidents. This includes getting adequate sleep and not taking substances that may impair driving ability. Accidents involving transport vans or buses are governed by common carrier law.

Commercial drivers are generally held to a much higher standard when it comes evaluating how safely they are driving. Head-on crashes tend to happen when one driver either becomes distracted or sleepy. Medical conditions also play a large role. Undiagnosed sleep apnea or high blood pressure can all impact a person’s ability to drive safely. When drivers are negligent and cause an accident they may face civil liability for any resulting injuries or deaths. A victim or their family may be able to file a claim for lost wages, medical bills and pain and suffering.
