Sep 9, 2019

Jo Eager El Cajon: Jo Eager Injured In El Cajon Helicopter Crash At Gillespie Field

SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA (September 9, 2019) – A Chopper 8 traffic reporter identified as Jo Eager was injured in a helicopter crash at Gillespie Field.

Jo Eager was a passenger in the helicopter when it failed to stick its landing and turned to the side before hitting the ground. Both Jo Eager and the pilot were pulled out of the helicopter before it started smoking and burst into flames.

Jo Eager was taken to the hospital in order to receive treatment, but was released a few hours later. She told reporters that she was very grateful rescuers were able to remove her so quickly.

An investigation into the helicopter crash remains ongoing at this time.

Liability In Helicopter Crashes

According to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), “The overall accident rate fell to 3.19 accidents per 100,000 flight hours in 2016 compared with 3.67 accidents in 2015.  The fatal accident rate fell slightly to 0.51 accidents per 100,000 flight hours in 2016 compared with a 0.52 rate in 2015. However, the rate is down from 0.65 in 2014 and 1.02 in 2013.” Here are just a few of the most common causes of helicopter crashes:

  • Mechanical error
  • Loss of fuel
  • Operator error
  • Design defect
  • Miscommunication from ground control
  • Loss of control
  • Electrical malfunction

Operator error, in particular, accounts for the disproportionate number of accidents. Take off and landing are the most dangerous portions of any helicopter flight. It takes a lot of training and practice to be able to safely land a helicopter. If a helicopter pilot contributed to a crash the company that they work for could face civil liability in the event any person is injured. Injuries from a helicopter crash are often fairly serious and may include:

  • Broken bones
  • Spinal cord injuries
  • Soft tissue damage
  • Head injuries
  • Post Traumatic Stress Disorder

Any person that is injured in a helicopter crash may have legal recourse through a bodily injury claim. Damages in a civil claim can help cover lost wages, medical bills and pain and suffering. A helicopter accident attorney can investigate all of the facts of your case and let you know what your legal options are.
