Jessica Ordaz Palmdale: Eastside Union School District Principal Suspected of DUI Following Palmdale Car Accident That Killed Victim

PALMDALE, CALIFORNIA (November 17, 2018) A 29-year-old woman who has been identified as  Jessica Ordaz was tragically killed in a head-on car accident with a driver suspected of DUI.

California Highway Patrol are saying that  Jessica Ordaz was driving a 2010 Mazda 3 on 50th Street East. For reasons that remain under investigation Eastside Union School District Principal Mary Kruppe, 35, of drove into opposing lanes of traffic and collided with the victim’s car.

Firefighters and paramedics rushed to the scene in order to help Jessica Ordaz, but she later died due to her injuries. Police think that alcohol may have been a factor in a crash.

Mary Kruppe was taken to the hospital in order to be treated for moderate injuries.

How Alcohol Impairs Driving

Alcohol and driving should never mix. The legal BAC limit in California is under 0.08 for drivers over 21. It is under 0.04 for commercial drivers. It has been estimated that by the time a person gets arrested for DUI they have driven under the influence on numerous occasions. People often get lulled into a false sense of security when they drink and drive. Just because you can drink once and not crash does not take away from the fact that drinking and driving is inherently dangerous. Here are just a few of the ways that drinking affects a person’s ability to drive safely.

    • Alcohol significantly slows down a person’s reaction time. This can have lethal consequences when drunk drivers encounter unexpected or difficult driving situations.

    • Alcohol slows eye muscle function as well as vision. Coordination is impaired.

  • A driver’s ability to judge a car’s position on the road is also significantly affected by alcohol. Alcohol can also make a driver drowsy and prone to falling asleep.

Victims of DUI accidents are protected by a number of laws. A person that is injured will have the ability to file a personal injury claim for damages. The family of a victim will have the ability to file a wrongful death claim. It’s important to seek the experienced guidance of a car accident attorney after a DUI accident. An attorney can take steps to make sure that your rights are being protected.

Liability In DUI Car Accidents

Drivers have a responsibility to avoid taking any substances that may affect their ability to operate their vehicle safely. This includes prescription drugs. A driver that causes an accident while under the influence will typically face criminal as well as civil liability. If the drunk driver is employed by a school district the school district may potentially bear liability as well. This depends on the facts of the case. If the employee was working during the accident the school district could be held liable. Victims or their family may have the ability to file a municipal negligence claim for damages.
