James Woods Pittsburg: James Woods, 61, of Rio Vista Killed In Pittsburg Semi-Truck Accident While Riding Motorcycle On Highway 4 Near Antioch

PITTSBURG, CALIFORNIA (August 8, 2019) – A 61-year-old man identified as James Woods Jr. has tragically died in a motorcycle accident after being hit by a semi-truck on Highway 4 Near Antioch.

Pittsburg police are saying that the accident took place around 8:00 a.m. Police think that another vehicle collided with James Woods causing him to be ejected from his motorcycle.

Shortly after that crash James Woods was hit by a big rig truck and sustained major injuries. Paramedics rushed to the scene in order to help the victim.

Despite life-saving efforts James Woods later died due to his injuries. The driver of the semi-truck remained at the scene and cooperated with police. Authorities blocked four lanes of traffic on Highway 4 as they tried to determine what happened.

Liability In Semi-Truck Accidents

According to research by the NHTSA, “Large truck fatalities rose 9 percent to 4,761, an increase of 392 lives lost over the prior year. About 1,300 of the deaths were truckers. The remaining 72 percent occurred in the other vehicle involved in the collision.” Truck drivers are often forced to work very long hours and can easily become fatigued. In fact, fatigue is the number one factor associated with fatal truck accidents. Here are just a few of the most common causes of truck accidents:

  • Speeding
  • Driver distraction
  • Driver illness
  • Unfamiliarity with roadway
  • Prescription drug use

Truck drivers are supposed to operate their vehicles according to the prevailing conditions. According to California Vehicle Code 22350, “No person shall drive a vehicle upon a highway at a speed greater than is reasonable or prudent having due regard for weather, visibility, the traffic on, and the surface and width of, the highway, and in no event at a speed which endangers the safety of persons or property.”

There is simply no excuse for a truck driver to ever rear-end another vehicle or motorcyclist. Truck drivers must regulate their speed and follow distance to be able to avoid obstacles that stop suddenly on the highway. According to trucking experts at Interstate Motor Carriers, “The general rule of thumb is that for every 10 mph the commercial vehicle travels, the driver needs to add their truck’s length in following distance. For example, truck drivers traveling 50 mph will need to leave five of their trucks’ lengths between them and the vehicle in front of them. However, factors such as the tire quality, breaks and terrain can affect this ratio.”

The family of any victim that died in a semi-truck accident may have legal recourse through California Civil Code 377.60. Damages in a civil claim can help with funeral expenses, lost wages, medical bills and pain and suffering. Claimants in a civil matter could include a victim’s spouse, children, siblings and parents. Unfortunately, many truck companies will often fight hard to deny liability for an accident and blame the victim. A truck accident attorney can help ensure that this doesn’t happen and make sure that your rights are being protected. An attorney can investigate your case free of cost and get to the bottom of what happened.
