Pedestrian Safety For Children Walking To School

Children all across the United States walk to and from school every day. It has been estimated that children ages 10 – 14 are the most of risk of being killed or seriously injured in a pedestrian collision. Certain times are more problematic than others. For example, children are injured most in September and October. There are a number of steps that parents can take to help their children be safe as they are going to school. These may include:

  • Teach your children about pedestrian safety.

  • Train them to be attentive in crosswalks and keep their phones put away. Children pick up their parents habits, even the bad ones.

  • Have your child follow a planned route. In many circumstances schools will have suggested routes that keep children away from busier roads.

  • Most children do not develop the ability to judge the safety of intersections until they are 9 – 11. It’s best to walk with them in a supervised fashion until they develop these skills.

Having a child be seriously injured or killed in a pedestrian accident is every parent’s worst nightmare. A pedestrian accident attorney can evaluate the facts of your case and let you know what your rights are.

Liability In Pedestrian Accidents

There may be numerous sources of potential negligence in a pedestrian accident. For example, a driver could be negligent and simply not paying attention. If a driver leaves the scene of an accident that causes great bodily injury that is a felony and they will likely face both criminal and civil liability for their actions. Moreover, cities could also be responsible for an accident if a dangerous condition in the roadway contributed to the crash. A number of intersections in California lack basic safety features like stop signs. Victims of a pedestrian accident may have the ability to file a negligence claim in order to be compensated for their injuries or loss.
