Liability In DUI Accidents
According to the Centers For Disease Control, “Every day, 29 people in the United States die in motor vehicle crashes that involve an alcohol-impaired driver.1 This is one death every 50 minutes. The annual cost of alcohol-related crashes totals more than $44 billion.” Alcohol has a number of very serious affects on drivers including:
- Loss of judgement
- Reduced coordination
- Difficulty steering
- Lowered alertness
- Impaired perception
It is a felony to operate a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol and cause an accident that results in bodily injury. According to California Vehicle Code 20001, “The driver of a vehicle involved in an accident resulting in injury to a person, other than himself or herself, or in the death of a person shall immediately stop the vehicle at the scene of the accident and shall fulfill the requirements of Sections 20003 and 20004.”
Any person that is injured in a car accident with a drunk driver may be able to seek justice through a bodily injury claim. Damages in a civil claim can help cover lost wages, medical bills and pain and suffering. It’s important to get medical care after an accident. Failing to get the proper medical care may jeopardize your ability to file a claim down the road. A car accident attorney can examine all of the facts of your case and let you know what your legal options are.
