Los Angeles Dump Truck Accident: Grandmother Injured In Pacoima Dump Truck Accident After It Crashed In Apartment Building On West Brandord Street and Laurel Canyon Boulevard –> Hero Tenant Ramiro Gutierrez Helps Rescue Grandmother
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA (August 21, 2019) – Multiple people were injured in a dump truck accident after the driver lost control of his vehicle and crashed into an apartment building on West Brandord Street.
Pacioma police are saying that surveillance video showed that the accident first took place when the dump truck and a silver Mazda collided at the intersection. The force of the collision then sent the dump truck into the apartment.
Yajaira Ramos, who lives in the building, said that the impact felt like an earthquake. She then saw children running towards her and saying that their grandmother was injured.
Ramiro Gutierrez also lives in the building where the grandmother and another woman was injured. Ramiro Gutierrez was able to pull one of the women from underneath all of the drywall.
Paramedics then took the grandmother to the hospital where she is listed in serious condition. Building inspectors arrived at the scene and informed tenants that the building would have to be evacuated.
Liability In Dump Truck Accidents
According to one report, “Dump truck accidents severe enough that the vehicle had to be towed away rose 9%, hitting 8,206 in 2016, the latest year statistics are available. The number of dump truck accidents (which includes many non-construction-related uses) involving injuries rose 2.7%, to 5,483, according to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMSCA).” A fully loaded dump truck can weight as much as 56,000 lbs and can be very difficult to stop. Here are just a few of the most common reasons why dump truck accidents occur:
- Distracted driving
- Drunk driving
- Fatigued driving
California determines liability on the basis of comparative negligence. Sometimes an accident can be the fault of two or more drivers. In addition to being negligent in causing an accident a dump truck driver could potentially be negligent in how they respond to an accident. For example, if a dump truck driver over-corrects this could cause the truck to loose control and careen into buildings or other cars. Victims of dump truck accidents often suffer from a wide variety of injuries including:
- Back and neck injuries
- Broken bones
- Organ damage
- Spinal cord injuries
Dump truck companies will often fight hard to deny liability after an accident. Victims will typically have recourse through a bodily injury claim. Damages in a civil claim can help cover lost wages, medical bills and pain and suffering. It’s important to seek medical treatment after an accident. Failing to receive treatment may jeopardize your ability to pursue a civil claim down the line. A truck accident attorney can examine all of the facts of your case and let you know what your legal options are.
