El Dorado Hills Fire Department will also be hosting a fundraiser in order to help support the victim and his family. Investigators and Pacific Gas and Electric Co. crews were called to the scene in order to determine the cause of the explosion accident.
The El Dorado Hills Fire Chief said that these types of explosions typically occur when gas or propane ignite. It took nearly 45 minutes to extinguish the fire and the family’s home was completely destroyed.
An investigation into the home explosion that injured George Napoleon remains ongoing.
Causes Of Explosion Accidents
There are numerous types of explosions. But most accidents at residential homes involve gas. According to one report from the American Gas Association, “there are 2.4 million miles of underground pipelines in the United States and they estimate that more than 177 million Americans use natural gas in their homes.” On average there are around 17 deaths every year caused by natural gas explosions. Here are just a few of the most common reasons why gas accidents take place:
- Improper installation of gas furnaces or other gas appliances
- Gas lines that are damaged and leaking
- Defective equipment operated by gas
- Faulty manufacturing of gas tanks
There are two essential elements for an explosion to take place. The first is combustible material like gas and the second is an ignition source. An ignition source could come from literally anywhere. Faulty wiring could ignite gas. In the right circumstances even a static electric shock could trigger an explosion. Depending on a number of factors there may be multiple sources of liability for a gas explosion accident.
Liability In Gas Explosion Accidents
Companies like Pacific Gas & Electric have a legal responsibility to maintain their lines and premises in a reasonably safe manner in order to prevent explosions. According to the California Civil Code § 1714 subsection (a), “Everyone is responsible, not only for the result of his or her willful acts, but also for an injury occasioned to another by his or her want of ordinary care or skill in the management of his or her property or person, except so far as the latter has, willfully or by want of ordinary care, brought the injury upon himself or herself.”
If a gas company failed to maintain their lines and this contributed to an explosion they could be held at fault. Even if gas lines were installed correctly they corrode and degrade like everything else. Likewise, companies that install appliances could face civil liability if their negligence contributed to an explosion. Leaks often occur when appliance installers fail to put on the right safety caps. Even a small opening can cause dangerous levels of natural gas buildup.
Any person that is injured in a gas explosion accident may have legal recourse through a bodily injury claim. Damages can cover lost wages, medical bills and pain and suffering. Burn injuries from gas explosions can be some of the most painful and costly injuries that a person can endure. Victims will typically need extensive medical care and skin grafts. The average cost of medical treatment for severe burn injuries is around $1,600,000. Unfortunately, gas companies will often fight hard to deny liability following an accident. A burn injury lawyer can examine all of the facts of your case free of cost and let you know what your legal rights are.
