Gary Begley Healdsburg: Gary Begley Injured Healdsburg Hit-And-Run Car Accident While Riding Bicycle By Westside Road and West Dry Creek

HEALDSBURG, CALIFORNIA (August 19, 2019) – A 61-year-old man identified as Gary Begley was seriously injured in a hit-and-run car accident while bicycling by the intersection of Westside Road and West Dry Creek.

California Highway Patrol are saying that the accident took place around 5:45 p.m. The driver that hit Gary Begley fled the scene.

Paramedics rushed to help the victim who was then transported to the Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital. Gary Begley remains in the hospital with very serious injuries including multiple skull fractures, brain bleed, broken ribs, punctured kidneys and a broken shoulder.

His sister Terri Moss said that her brother always uses his bicycle to get around. Police are still trying to determine the make and model of the vehicle involved. Anyone that may have seen the collision is encouraged to reach out to investigators at 707-588-1400.

Liability In Pedestrian Accidents

According to the Centers For Disease Control, “Bicycle trips account for only 1% of all trips in the United States. However, bicyclists face a higher risk of crash related injury and deaths than occupants in motor vehicles. In 2015 in the United States, over 1,000 bicyclists died and there were almost 467,000 bicycle-related injuries.” Here are five of the most common reasons for bicycle accidents:

  • Inattentive driving
  • Speeding
  • Riding too close to a bicycle lane
  • Drivers failing to yield the right of way while turning or merging
  • Drivers failing to notice bicyclists at sidewalks, parking lots or driveways

Drivers have a legal responsibility to yield the right of way to pedestrians that are in lawfully marked crosswalks or bicycle lanes. According to California Vehicle Code 21950, “The driver of a vehicle shall yield the right-of-way to a pedestrian crossing the roadway within any marked crosswalk or within any unmarked crosswalk at an intersection, except as otherwise provided in this chapter.” Drivers that fail to yield the right of way will likely be found at fault. Bicyclists and pedestrians are far more likely to receive serious injuries from an accident including:

  • Head injuries
  • Spinal cord injuries
  • Broken bones
  • Organ damage
  • Psychological trauma

Any person that is injured in a bicycle accident may be able to hold the negligent driver accountable through a bodily injury claim. Damages in a bodily injury claim can help with medical bills, lost wages and pain and suffering. A bicycle accident attorney can examine all of the facts of your case and let you know what your legal options are. It doesn’t cost anything to hire an attorney and they only get paid if they are able to successfully resolve your case.
