Staying Safe Around Trucks As A Bicyclist
It has been estimated that nearly 5,000 pedestrians and cyclists are killed every year by trucks. It’s important that both truck drivers and cyclists are well informed of safety rules in order to avoid accidents. Here are just a few safety precautions that cyclists should take in order to avoid getting hit.
Cyclists should not stop next to the right side of a truck at an intersection. Trucks make wide right turns and it’s easy to get run over if you are not careful. As a general rule of thumb cyclists should stay at least 3 feet away from sedans and trucks.
Stay away from the side of trucks no matter what lane you are in. Trucks have large blind spots that are big enough to make cars disappear. Being next to the side of a truck as a cyclist is extremely dangerous.
Avoid passing trucks when traffic is stopped unless you can be completely clear of the truck before an intersection. In general, it’s simply not a good idea to pass trucks on their right side at all.
Pedestrian accidents can leave victims with traumatic injuries and often result in death. It’s important to contact an experienced truck accident attorney if you have been involved in a collision. There are laws designed to protect your rights. An attorney can conduct a thorough investigation into what happened and let you know what all of your options are.
Liability In Truck Accidents
Depending on the facts of the case, there are a number of entities that could potentially face liability for the truck accident that killed Francisco Carranza. Police will need to examine the behavior of the truck driver leading up to the crash. Most intersections are equipped with traffic cameras that can be used by police to help determine liability. A number of truck drivers get distracted by their cell phones or by GPS. Fatigue plays a large role in truck accidents as well. Drivers are often expected to work gruelling hours and keep up with unrealistic schedule expectations.
But not all accidents are completely the fault of a human driver. Street design and maintenance can contribute to accidents as well. This is of particular importance for pedestrians in Los Angeles County. Consider, for example, this map of some of the most dangerous intersections in Los Angeles.
When a pedestrian is killed in a car accident due to a dangerous defect in the roadway the city may face civil liability. A truck accident attorney can conduct an investigation into the road where the crash took place. Victims may be entitled to damages including lost wages, medical bills and pain and suffering.
