ANAHEIM, CALIFORNIA (July 28, 2019) – Five teenagers from Utah — one of whom was identified as Cristina Gaona — were injured in a car accident with an alleged drunk driver by the intersection of Orangewood Avenue and Manchester Avenue.

Anaheim police are saying that the car accident took place on Friday just before midnight. The driver of a 2014 Doge sedan rand a red light and hit a Honda fit carrying Cristina Gaona and the four other girls from Utah.

Both vehicles hit a light pole after the initial accident. Police arrested the 24-year-old driver that hit the girls on suspicion of felony DUI. All of the girls sustained very serious injuries and had to receive treatment.

A Go Fund Me account has been set up for Cristina Gaona in order to help cover her medical expenses. She recently graduated from Pine View High and earned a full-ride scholarship to play soccer.

Liability In DUI Car Accidents

According to Mothers Against Drunk Driving, “In fatal crashes in 2017, the highest percentage of drunk drivers was for drivers ages 21 to 24 (27 percent), followed by ages 25 to 34 (26 percent) and 35 to 44 (23 percent).” Many drivers operate their vehicles dozens of times drunk before they are eventually caught.

It is a felony to operate a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol. According to California Vehicle Code 23152, “(a) It is unlawful for a person who is under the influence of any alcoholic beverage to drive a vehicle. (b) It is unlawful for a person who has 0.08 percent or more, by weight, of alcohol in his or her blood to drive a vehicle.” The truth is that even small amounts of alcohol can seriously impair a person’s ability to drive safely.  For example alcohol can impact a driver’s:

  • Reaction time – Alcohol slows reflexes thereby preventing drivers from responding quickly to situations.
  • Vision – Alcohol slows eye muscle function often resulting in blurred vision.
  • Tracking – Alcohol slows a driver’s ability to track objects and other drivers on the road.
  • Concentration – Alcohol can cause drowsiness and loss of concentration.
  • Comprehension – Alcohol lowers a person’s ability to make rational decisions.
  • Coordination – Alcohol lowers a driver’s hand/eye coordination.

Any person that is injured in a car accident with a drunk driver may have legal recourse through a bodily injury claim. Damages in a civil claim can include money for medical bills, lost wages and pain and suffering. Even a moderate head-injury of back injury can result in life-time treatment costs well over $100,000. This can be a crippling burden both for individuals and families. A car accident attorney can examine all of the facts of your case and let you know what your rights are.
