Chi Sung Kim Wilmington: 51-Year-Old Chi Kim Died In Bicycle Accident In Wilmington After Hit-And-Run Collision With Semi-Truck Driver Near the Intersection of Anaheim Street and Sampson Avenue

WILMINGTON, CALIFORNIA (December 17, 2018) – A 51-year-old man identified as Chi Sung Kim has tragically died after he was hit by a semi-truck driver while riding his bicycle in Wilmington by Anaheim Street and Sampson Avenue.

Los Angeles police are saying that the accident took place around 5:15 a.m. It is believed that Chi Sung Kim’s bicycle was clipped by the rear tire of the semi-truck.

Instead of stopping at the scene and giving aid to the cyclist the driver kept going. There is currently no description of the driver available, but the semi-truck itself is being described as light in color.

Los Angeles city officials are currently offering a $50,000 reward for information leading to the identification, arrest and conviction of the truck driver involved in the collision.

Witnesses that may have seen the truck accident that killed Chi Sung Kim or who have information about the driver are encouraged to contact LA Regional Crime Stoppers by calling 800-222-8477.

Liability In Hit-And-Run Accidents

According to the American Automobile Association, there are an average of 682,000 hit-and-run accidents every year in the United States. Around two thirds of fatal hit-and-run collisions involve pedestrians or bicyclists. California law requires drivers to stop after a hit-and-run collision even if they are not the party at fault. Drivers that don’t stop can face civil as well as legal liability. According to the California Vehicle Code, “(a) The driver of a vehicle involved in an accident resulting in injury to a person, other than himself or herself, or in the death of a person shall immediately stop the vehicle at the scene of the accident and shall fulfill the requirements of Sections 20003 and 20004.”

A truck driver and the company they work for could potentially face liability for a hit-and-run accident. Even if a truck driver didn’t cause an accident, they should remain at the scene and help the other driver or pedestrian. Getting prompt medical care often can make the difference between life and death. The family of a pedestrian or cyclist that died have the ability to pursue a claim for damages under the state’s wrongful death law. A wrongful death attorney can examine the specific facts of your case and let you know what your rights are.
