SANTA CRUZ COUNTY, CALIFORNIA (July 29, 2019) – A bicyclist was seriously injured after being hit by a car on State Route 236 not far from Brook Lane.
California Highway Patrol are saying that the accident took place around 1:28 p.m. and involved a teal Ford Focus. The driver of the ford stopped nearby and waited for authorities.
Paramedics rushed to the scene in order to help the injured bicyclist. He was taken to a local trauma center as police continued their investigation.
Liability In Bicycle Accidents
According to the NHTSA, “There were 783 bicyclists killed in traffic crashes in the United States in 2017. As you might expect, when a crash occurs between a vehicle and a bike, it’s the cyclist who is most likely to be injured.” Accidents tend to spike at night when visibility is lower.
Drivers must do everything in their power to avoid hitting cyclists. According to California Vehicle Code 21950, “The driver of a vehicle approaching a pedestrian within any marked or unmarked crosswalk shall exercise all due care and shall reduce the speed of the vehicle or take any other action relating to the operation of the vehicle as necessary to safeguard the safety of the pedestrian.”
Any person that is injured in a bicycle accident may have legal recourse through a bodily injury claim. Damages can help with medical bills, lost wages and pain and suffering. Many victims may not even realize the full extent of their injuries until several weeks or months after an accident. A car accident attorney can examine all of the facts of your case and let you know what your rights are.
