Arturo Gonzalez Died In Holtville Semi-Truck Accident After Pickup Was Pushed Into Rositas Canal Near Holt Road And Norrish Road
HOLTVILLE, CALIFORNIA (June 13, 2019) – A 41-year-old man identified as Arturo Gonzalez from Calipatria has tragically died in a car accident after he was hit by a semi-truck driver that allegedly ran a stop sign.
California Highway Patrol are saying that the accident took place at the intersection of Holt Road and Norrish Road. The force of the impact sent Arturo Gonzalez’s GMC pickup truck into a canal.
Firefighters and emergency responders rushed to the scene of the accident in order to help the victim. Even the driver of the semi-truck dove in to the canal in an effort to save the victim.
Despite life-saving efforts Arturo Gonzalez later succumbed to his injuries. The exact cause of death has not been released at this time. Imperial County officials are still working on the coroner report.
Sheriff’s deputies are recommending that the driver of the semi-truck should be charged with “involuntary manslaughter without malice.” A full investigation into the accident remains ongoing at this time.
What To Do After A Truck Accident
Around 5,000 people are killed every year in truck accidents. This may be due to a number of different reasons. Some drivers are fatigued and not able to react as quickly to conditions on the road. Unfamiliarity with roadways is actually another major problem. Being involved in a truck accident can be overwhelming to many people. Here are a few steps that you should take if you or someone that you love has been involved in a truck accident:
- Call the police and have them document the scene. A police report will be important evidence later on.
- Document the scene as best you can. Take pictures of any of your injuries and the vehicles involved.
- Seek eye witnesses. Eye witnesses can help corroborate what happened, especially if the accident took place in a rural area.
- Contact an experienced truck accident attorney. An attorney can examine your case free of cost and make sure that evidence is being preserved.
Depending on the facts of any case, there may be multiple sources of liability for a truck accident. An attorney can let you know what your rights are following an accident. The family member of a truck accident victim will typically be entitled to damages if anyone is injured or killed.
Liability In Truck Accidents
Every driver is required to stop at stops signs and yield the right of way to vehicles that have approached from another path. According to California Vehicle Code 21802, “The driver of any vehicle approaching a stop sign at the entrance to, or within, an intersection shall stop as required by Section 22450. The driver shall then yield the right-of-way to any vehicles which have approached from another highway, or which are approaching so closely as to constitute an immediate hazard, and shall continue to yield the right-of-way to those vehicles until he or she can proceed with reasonable safety.”
Truck drivers that run through stop signs may face civil liability in the event of an accident. A fully loaded semi-truck can weigh as much as 80,000 lbs. Even a low speed impact can have devastating consequences. Victims will be able to hold negligent truck drivers accountable for their actions through a civil claim. Damages in a civil claim may include compensation for funeral expenses, lost wages and emotional trauma.
