Liability In Ambulance Accidents
Emergency vehicles tend to have a great deal of immunity in the event of an accident. But this is only the case if they have their emergency lights and sirens on and are responding to an emergency. According to California Vehicle Code 21806, “Upon the immediate approach of an authorized emergency vehicle which is sounding a siren and which has at least one lighted lamp exhibiting red light that is visible, under normal atmospheric conditions, from a distance of 1,000 feet to the front of the vehicle, the surrounding traffic shall, except as otherwise directed by a traffic officer, do the following.”
If an ambulance or other emergency vehicle does not have their lights and sirens on they are held to the same standard as everyone else. If an ambulance driver causes an accident in such a condition the city or company that they work for could face civil liability. Victims of ambulance accident may have legal recourse through a bodily injury claim. Damages in a civil claim can help cover lost wages, medical bills and pain and suffering. A car accident attorney can examine all of the facts of your case and let you know what your legal options are.
