Michael Beede Turlock: 39-Year-Old Motorcycle Rider Killed In Car Accident
TURLOCK, CALIFORNIA (December 28, 2018) – A 39-year-old motorcyclist was tragically killed in a car accident on Highway 99 not far from Countryside Plaza.
Michael Beede was driving his motorcycle on State Route 99 when he hit the back of a pickup truck that was making a left turn onto the 99 on-ramp from Fulkerth Road. The driver stopped at the scene and cooperated with authorities.
Firefighters and paramedics began life-saving measures in order to revive Michael Beede, but he later died due to his injuries. It remains unclear if charges will be filed against the pickup truck driver.
Liability In Left Turn Accidents
Vehicles turning left cause thousands of accidents, injuries and deaths every year. According to the California Vehicle Code 20801, “(a) The driver of a vehicle intending to turn to the left or to complete a U-turn upon a highway, or to turn left into public or private property, or an alley, shall yield the right-of-way to all vehicles approaching from the opposite direction which are close enough to constitute a hazard at any time during the turning movement, and shall continue to yield the right-of-way to the approaching vehicles until the left turn or U-turn can be made with reasonable safety.”
Simply put, drivers turning left will typically be held at fault for accidents unless they were turning on a green arrow. A driver should otherwise yield the right of way to approaching vehicles. Unfortunately, drivers often miss oncoming motorcyclists because of their relatively low profile. The family of a motorcyclist that died in an accident will be able to hold the at-fault driver responsible by filing a wrongful death claim. A motorcycle accident attorney can examine the specific facts of your case and let you know what your options are.
