MOUNTAIN CENTER, CALIFORNIA (September 23, 2018) – A teenager was critically injured after an accident involving a log splitter at Camp Ronald McDonald For Good Times in the San Bernardino National Forest.
Police in Mountain Center are saying that the accident took place around 3:40 p.m. at the camp which is located on the 56000 block of Apple Canyon Road.
Emergency medical workers rushed to the scene of the accident in order to help the teen. The victim had to be airlifted out of the camp in order to receive treatment.
Camp Ronald McDonald For Good Times provides assistance programs to children who have been diagnosed with cancer.
An investigation into the log splitter accident remains ongoing.
Log Splitter Accident Injuries and Safety Guidelines
Log splitters are gasoline powered machines that use a hydraulic cutting edge to split logs in much the same way an axe would. A lever at the top of the machine is typically released which then moves the cutting blade. The pressure generated from a log splitter has been estimated to equal 13.5 meganewtons per square meter. That’s similar to the force from being run over by the tires of a Boeing 747. It is unsurprising, then, that most log splitter accidents result in amputations or severe crushing injuries.
Victims of log splitter accidents usually suffer thrombosis of the radial artery or lacerations of other major artery groups. Doctors writing for the Yale Journal of Biology and Medicine suggested that surgical revascularization was the best treatment option for some patients. According to Log Splitter Product Expert Dale Vogelsanger, there are a number of steps that you should take to help stay safe around log splitters:
Wear Protective Gear: Debris flies everywhere when you are operating a log splitter. Eye protection is critical. Hearing protectors and heavy work gloves can help keep your ears and hands safe.
No Kids: Children can often be fascinated by log splitters, but no child should ever be near one in operation. Children should always be kept away and not allowed to use log splitters even with adult supervision.
Read The Manual: In order to operate any machine safely you need to read the owner’s manual.
Stop To Make Adjustments: Occasionally you’ll need to adjust the settings on a log splitter. Never do this while the machine is active and in use.
Operate In Good Lighting: Never use a log splitter in dim lighting conditions. One wrong move can result in an amputation or serious injury.
Depending on the facts of any case there may be multiple sources of recovery for victims that have sustained injuries from a wood splitting accident.
Liability In Log Splitting Accidents
Businesses have a responsibility to make sure that their premises are reasonably safe for the guests that come to visit. This is all the more important when there are children on a property. Children need to be adequately supervised and when they are not that may impose liability on the property owner. As a rule of thumb, children should never be allowed to use log splitters regardless of whether or not they are supervised. In any accident involving a log splitter there may be an additional source of liability if the log splitter itself was defective.
There have been a number of recalls by log splitters developed by Brave Products of Ill. The hydraulic arm on these log splitters have had defects with rod retention. The rods have often rapidly shot out of the machine causing amputations and other crushing injuries. If a log splitter defect was the cause of an accident, victims may be able to file a product liability claim in order to recover damages for medical bills, lost wages and pain and suffering. A personal injury lawyer can evaluate your case and let you know what your rights are.
