Balcony Fall Statistics
According to the Committee on Injury and Poison Prevention, “Falls of all kinds represent an important cause of child injury and death. In the United States, approximately 140 deaths from falls occur annually in children younger than 15 years. Three million children require emergency department care for fall-related injuries.” These accidents can result in devastating and costly injuries including:
- Bone fractures
- Head injuries
- Internal trauma
- Spinal injuries
- Hip injuries
- Psychological trauma
There are a number of steps that can be taken to help keep children safe and prevent falls. Here are just a few recommendations to prevent falls in multi-story residences:
- Supervise children at all times, especially when there are open windows.
- Install locks on windows to prevent them from sliding from more than 4 inches.
- Discourage children from playing on fire-escapes.
- Avoid placing furniture on balconies that children could potentially climb.
A balcony fall can have devastating consequences on both a child and their family. For example, the medical costs associated with treating a brain injury can range from 85,000 to 3,000,000. Parents often feel an incredible amount of guilt after an accident like this, but the truth is that a number of balcony falls are a result of dangerous conditions on a property.
Liability In Balcony Falls
Property owners have a responsibility to their guests and to the community to keep their premises in a reasonably safe condition. This includes making sure that balconies and other building structures are compliant with building codes and are in a safe condition. There are a number of safety or structural problems that may lead to a balcony collapse including:
- Rotted wood
