Drunk Driving In The United States
Drunk driving is an epidemic in the United States. According to the Centers for Disease Control, nearly 11,000 people die every year in the United States in DUI accidents. This accounts for 28% of all fatal car accidents. In 2016 alone, over 1 million drivers were arrested on suspicion of DUI. Impairment is not simply brought about by alcohol. A number of other drugs (both legal and illegal) can substantially hinder a person’s ability to drive safely. Marijuana has been estimated to make a person 25% more likely to be involved in an accident. Victims of accidents involving drunk drivers will typically have the ability to file a claim for damages in order to help with lost wages, medical bills and pain and suffering.
Liability In Car Accidents Involving Drunk Drivers
Drivers are supposed to avoid taking any drugs or substances that could impact their ability to operate their vehicle safely. According to the California DMV:
“Per California’s driving under the influence (DUI) laws, it’s illegal to operate a motor vehicle with any of the following blood alcohol concentration (BAC) percentages:
0.08% or higher― 21 years old or older operating a regular passenger vehicle.
0.04% or higher―operating a commercial vehicle.
0.01% or higher―younger than 21 years old.”
The states DUI laws also include medication including those that can be obtained over the counter. The Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC) chart below provided by the DMV lists the typical effects that various amounts of alcohol will have on the human body.
Victims of DUI accidents can sustain critical injuries and take months to recover. A Los Angeles car accident lawyer can evaluate the facts of your case and help you receive financial compensation for your injuries.
