ST HELENA, CALIFORNIA (April 16, 2019) – At least four people were injured a Wine Country Balloons hot air balloon accident after it made a hard landing in St Helena by White Sulphur Road.

There were at least 17 people on the hot air balloon when it departed from Santa Rosa. The hot air balloon was blown to the east when it made a hard landing near a home and vineyard.

This accident comes just two weeks after another accident in Yountville when a hot air balloon hit a power line and injured three people. An investigation into the cause of the accident remains ongoing at this time.

Liability In Hot Air Balloon Accidents

Operation of hot air balloons are regulated by the Federal Aviation Administration. Having said that, operating a hot air balloon can be extremely tricky. A hot air balloon is effectively a giant nylon bag kept afloat by burning liquid propane. It is virtually impossible to guide balloons in one direction or another. At most, a pilot can change the altitude of the balloon by adding or releasing hot air. There are a number of potential dangers for passengers of hot air balloons.

  • Lighting strikes
  • Flying into power lines
  • Balloons catching fire
  • Balloons collapsing due to wind
  • Balloons making hard landings due to operator error

Generally speaking, hot air balloon accidents are fairly rare. According to NBC News, “Since 1964, the National Transportation Safety Board has investigated 775 hot air balloon incidents in the United States, 70 involving fatalities. Sixteen people died while hot air ballooning from 2002 to 2012.” Injuries in a hot air balloon accident can include broken bones, lacerations and spinal cord injuries.

If a hot air balloon operator was negligent and caused an accident they may face civil liability. Any person that was injured could recover damages through a bodily injury claim. Damages can include money for lost wages, medical bills and pain and suffering. It’s important to seek medical treatment following an accident. Victim’s may not even realize they are injured until several weeks or months later. A personal injury attorney can investigate your case free of cost and let you know what your options are.
