SANTA ROSA, CALIFORNIA (February 20, 2019) – A 7-year-old girl identified as Hazel Conzet was injured in a hit-and-run collision near her home on Louis Krohn Drive.
Santa Rosa authorities are saying that Hazel Conzet, her brother and a friend were traveling to a cousin’s house. A surveillance video showed a black BMW striking the girl and throwing her several feet underneath a parked SUV.
The driver of the BMW fled the scene, but the driver was later caught thanks to tips from the public. The 7-year-old is continuing to recover and has been able to return to school.
A full investigation into the accident remains ongoing.
Liability In Hit-And-Run Accidents
Drivers are supposed to exercise caution at all times, but especially in residential neighborhoods. Children playing are not random anomalies, they are part of the fabric of our neighborhoods. Good drivers should slow down and expect that there are children as they move through residential neighborhoods. In the event of an accident they should stop and call 911.
According to the California Vehicle Code 20002, “The driver of any vehicle involved in an accident resulting only in damage to any property, including vehicles, shall immediately stop the vehicle at the nearest location that will not impede traffic or otherwise jeopardize the safety of other motorists.” Drivers that do not stop after an accident that causes injury may face civil as well as criminal liability.
Victims of hit-and-run accidents are able to seek justice against the negligent driver through a bodily injury claim. Damages in a personal injury case can include compensation for lost wages, medical bills and pain and suffering. A pedestrian accident attorney can investigate your claim free of charge and let you know what your options are.
