San Francisco’s Vision Zero Plan
San Francisco is one of the most dangerous cities for pedestrians. The University of California Berkeley has actually created a website that shows which streets in San Francisco have the most accidents. It has been nicknamed TIMS. According to Berkeley’s website, “The Transportation Injury Mapping System (TIMS) has been developed over the past five-plus years by SafeTREC to provide quick, easy and free access to California crash data, the Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), that has been geo-coded by SafeTREC to make it easy to map out crashes.”
In order to make the city safer for pedestrians as well as motorists city officials have put forward a plan they’ve dubbed Vision Zero. There are four major components to the plan:
- Engineering: City officials will design roads to be safer. This includes installing protected bicycle lanes.
- Education: City officials hope to educate the public to encourage safe driving.
- Enforcement: San Francisco police will crack down on driver behavior that typically contributes to accidents.
- Evaluation: In order to eliminate traffic fatalities, city officials hope to learn when, where and why most accidents in the city take place.
Accidents tend to take place when drivers either speed or are distracted. In fact, it has been estimated that nearly 94% of all accidents involve some amount of human error. Depending on the facts of any case, there may be numerous sources of liability for any car accident in San Francisco.
Liability In Lyft Accidents
In many situations, a Lyft will be involved in an accident but the Lyft driver will not be at fault. Another driver may be held at fault if they were speeding or went through a red light. According to California Vehicle Code 22350, “No person shall drive a vehicle upon a highway at a speed greater than is reasonable or prudent having due regard for weather, visibility, the traffic on, and the surface and width of, the highway, and in no event at a speed which endangers the safety of persons or property.”
Even if the at fault driver in an accident does not have insurance or is never apprehended, Lyft passengers and drivers will typically be protected. Lyft offers all drivers and passengers a $1 million uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage. This is generally true – insofar as an accident takes place during period 2 & 3. This is the time in which Lyft passengers are being transported to their destination.
The family of any victim that died in a Lyft accident may have legal recourse through a wrongful death claim. Damages in a civil claim can help cover some of the economic and emotional trauma that most accidents cause. A Lyft accident attorney can examine your case free of cost and make sure that your rights are being protected. An attorney can make sure that evidence is being preserved and that negligent drivers are held to account for their actions.
