Liability In Boat Accidents
Boating for leisure and commercial fishing are very popular. It has been estimated that fisheries provide direct and indirect employment to over 500 million people around the world. But it’s important that boat drivers take steps to remain safe. There are “rules of the road” with respect to how to operate a boat in much the same way there are about driving a car. Drivers should maintain a safe distance with other boats and seek out and avoid objects or people in the water.
Generally speaking, speed boats are much more likely to be held liable for an accident than other vessels. Faster boats are expected to adhere to a heightened level of caution. If a boat operator is negligent and hits another boat they may face civil liability if anyone is injured or killed. Victim’s will have the ability to file a personal injury claim in order to recover damages for lost wages, medical bills and pain and suffering. Brain injuries are very common in high speed boating accidents. A boat accident attorney can review the specific facts of your claim and let you know what your rights are.
