Liability In Scooter Accidents
According to one an investigation by Consumer Reports, there were over 1,500 people involved in electric scooter accidents last year. This has led to a sharp increase in hospitalizations and deaths. The findings of the report go hand in hand with the rise of scooter sharing companies like Lime and Bird. For a small fee, anyone can rent these scooters and take them through San Diego, Los Angeles, San Francisco and several other cities. A number of scooter accidents take place due to driver negligence. Here are just a few of the factors associated with scooter accidents:
- Alcohol drug use
- Driver fatigue
- Driver distraction
Many accidents take place when drivers are distracted while making left turns. According to California Vehicle Code 21801, “The driver of a vehicle intending to turn to the left or to complete a U-turn upon a highway, or to turn left into public or private property, or an alley, shall yield the right-of-way to all vehicles approaching from the opposite direction which are close enough to constitute a hazard at any time during the turning movement, and shall continue to yield the right-of-way to the approaching vehicles until the left turn or U-turn can be made with reasonable safety.”
Victims of scooter accidents often receive very serious and costly injuries. According to Northwestern University, the cost to treat a serious head injury can be as high as $3,000,000. This can be devastating for both individuals as well as families. A scooter accident attorney can examine all of the facts of your case and let you know what your options are. Victims may be entitled to damages for medical bills, lost wages and pain and suffering.
