Liability In Left Turn Accidents
Drivers have a responsibility to operate their vehicles in a reasonably safe manner and take steps to avoid hitting pedestrians. This is especially important for drivers attempting to make left turns. According to the California Vehicle Code 21801, “The driver of a vehicle intending to turn to the left or to complete a U-turn upon a highway, or to turn left into public or private property, or an alley, shall yield the right-of-way to all vehicles approaching from the opposite direction which are close enough to constitute a hazard at any time during the turning movement, and shall continue to yield the right-of-way to the approaching vehicles until the left turn or U-turn can be made with reasonable safety.”
Victim’s of pedestrian accidents involving negligent drivers are able to seek compensation by filing a personal injury claim. Damages can include money for lost wages, medical bills and pain and suffering. Liability may extend beyond an individual driver. For example, if the operator of a van was working at the time of an accident the company that employed them could be held vicariously liable. A pedestrian accident attorney can investigate all aspects of your case and take steps to get you the best outcome after an accident.
