Liability In Truck Accidents
Commercial trucks log an average of 296 billion vehicle miles every year across the United States, according to the FMCSA. This leads to around 475,000 accidents every year. At least 22% of those crashes result in injury. Unlike accidents with smaller vehicles, even a low speed truck accident can lead to devastating injuries or death. Alcohol consumption contributes to a disproportionate number of accidents with consumer vehicles. In commercial trucking, fatigue and distracted driving contribute to most accidents.
Truck drivers are held to a very high standard when it comes to operating their vehicle safely. Drivers are expected to yield the right of way to pedestrians that are lawfully in a crosswalk. Far too often, drivers fail to see pedestrians or smaller vehicles and hit them. The family of a pedestrian that died in a truck accident is protected by a number of laws. They have the ability to seek damages through the state’s wrongful death statute. A truck accident attorney can examine the specific facts of your case and let you know if you have a claim that can be pursued.
