SALINAS: Edward Richard Reins Killed In Car Accident At WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca

Edward Richard Reins Died In Salinas Car Accident At the WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca While Trying To Help A Driver Who Lost Control

SALINAS, CALIFORNIA (October 18, 2018) A 68-year-old man and employee of WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca identified as Edward Richard Reins tragically died in an accident after he was hit by a car on the racetrack.

Salinas police are saying that the track worker was attempting to help another driver that lost control of their vehicle. Edward Richard Reins (who went by Richard) was hit by another driver on the racetrack at the WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca.

Emergency medical workers rushed to the scene of the crash, but the victim later died due to his injuries. Those that knew Richard spoke very fondly of him.

“We would sit around and tell stories of the craziness of the day, some from years past. We were a family,” said Jan Kaufman.

The track was being used by Exclusive Track Days, according to a post from Facebook. One of the cars in the group experienced a mechanical problem and began spilling oil onto the track.

A Porsche 911 GT3 slid through the oil and left the raceway. Another Porsche 911 GT3 hit a barrier on the left side of the raceway. At some point Edward Richard Reins left his station in order to assist a driver when he was hit by another vehicle.

For the most part track fatalities are pretty rare. A worker was killed in 2016 at the Owosso Speedway in Michigan after he was hit by a car. Andy Partridge was injured at the Irwindale Speedway earlier in the year when he was electrocuted by a trailer.

There is an active investigation into the accident that killed Richard Reins at this time.

Staying Safe On A Racetrack

Racetracks can be extremely hazardous places and the crew that help keep them safe must stay alert and be ready for anything. The crew at a racetrack should ideally all be certified as EMTs or firefighters.  According to Craig Clarke, an expert in racetrack safety, “We always have a point man at the head of the scene. He’s watching the field. All members have a whistle. When you hear a whistle, you stop and look for danger. If the situation is too bad, more tracks will give us a red flag to allow us to secure the scene safely.”

According to Clarke, there is a lot of on the job training. But common sense is one of the best things to stay safe. Very few regulations exist for racetracks. As a result, a number of businesses have been proactive about safety while others have been lacking. Victims of accidents at racetracks or their family may have the ability to file a claim for damages.

Liability In Racetrack Accidents

Racetracks are inherently dangerous and therefore owners and sponsors typically carry liability insurance in the event that there is an accident involving staff, spectators and other drivers. Depending on the facts of any case race owners or sponsors may face civil liability after an accident. For example, Nascar driver Tony Stewart recently settled a wrongful death lawsuit on behalf of the family of Kevin Ward. Drivers are expected to operate their vehicles as safely as possible. Racing crew must follow the proper safety procedures if there is a dangerous condition on the track. Of course, cars can often malfunction and contribute to accidents. A car accident attorney can examine the specific facts of your case and let you know where you stand in terms of your rights.
