T’Kai and Sister of Keyona Tiller Escape Arden Fair Mall Fight Involving Hundred of Teenagers; 2-Year-Old T’Kai After Sacramento Mall Brawl
SACRAMENTO, CALIFORNIA (December 31, 2018) – A 2-year-old identified as T’Kai suffered a broken leg after Keyona Tiller’s sister was escaping a fight that broke out at Arden Fair Mall.
Keyona Tiller is demanding that changes be made to help make Arden Fair Mall a safer place. She took T’Kai to the hospital after the accident only to discover that he suffered a broken leg.
The Mayor of Sacramento is looking into a few solutions to help make the mall safer. Mayor Darrell Steinberg released the following statement on Twitter.
“In light of the unacceptable events of the past few days, it may be necessary to at least temporarily require that people under 18 be accompanied by a parent or guardian when visiting @ArdenFair.”
This is far from the first fight to break out at the Arden Fair Mall. A fight in 2012 sent shoppers running for safety following reports that a gunman was on the loose. Another large fight broke out in 2014.
Mall officials put in place a similar policy in the following years that children had to be accompanied by adults. But there were widespread concerns in the time that followed that mostly young, black males were being singled out and removed.
There is currently an ongoing investigation into the mall fight that injured T’Kai.
Premises Liability Claims In Mall Fights
Arden Fair Mall and other businesses open to the public have a responsibility to maintain their premises in a reasonably safe manner. This includes taking steps to protect guests from acts of violence and criminal behavior. Malls should have a reasonable level of security to deter crime. Other safety measures such as cameras and lighting can help reduce crime.
The level of security that a mall should adopt depends on the location of the mall and the past history of criminal activity. Malls in a high crime area should have additional security. If there is a history of fights or violence at a mall that should put the mall’s owners on notice that there is a problem that needs to be addressed. If mall officials fail to take reasonable steps to keep guests safe, they could face civil liability if someone is injured.
Victim’s of crime at malls will have the ability to file a personal injury claim for damages. A premises liability attorney can examine the specific facts of your case and let you know what your rights are. An attorney can take steps to preserve evidence and make sure that your rights are being protected. There are statute of limitations associated with being able to file a claim, so it’s important to act quickly.
