Delta Airlines Flight Head To Seattle Experienced Major Turbulence That Left Five People Injured
RENO, NEVADA (February 14, 2019) – Five people were injured in a Delta Airlines flight after severe turbulence on a flight headed from southern California to Seattle.
The incident began as flight crew were making their rounds serving drinks and snacks to passengers. The plane began to experience turbulence that caused a flight crew and drink car to be launched into the air.
Joe Justice was one of the passengers on the flight. He captured video of the turbulence during which the plane nose dived two times. The flight took off from the John Wayne Airport but later made an emergency landing in Reno.
Numerous people were injured after being hit by the service cart. A woman with a small child in the bathroom of the plane was also injured. The FAA is currently investigating the incident.
Liability In Turbulence During Flights
Turbulence during flights is extremely common. Most turbulence is brief and unpleasant. But in more extreme situations, turbulence can throw passengers and cargo around causing serious injury. Airlines are considered “common carriers” under the law. According to the Judicial Council of California Civil Jury Instructions, “While a common carrier does not guarantee the safety of its passengers[or property that it transports], it must use reasonable skill to provide everything necessary for safe transportation, in view of the transportation used and the practical operation of the business.”
The Federal Aviation Act also holds airlines to a very high standard in terms of safety. While pilots cannot control the weather, they are obliged to check weather conditions and avoid flight paths likely to result in extreme turbulence. In the event of unexpected turbulence, flight techniques can help reduce the severity of the turbulence. Victims of turbulence may be able to recover damages by filing a personal injury claim. An attorney can investigate your case free of charge and help you receive financial compensation for your injuries.
