Risk Factors For Bus Operators
It is the responsibility of bus operators to make sure they are knowledgeable and compliant with all safety requirements for their vehicle. Failure to follow the applicable safety requirements for buses can have fatal consequences. Here are just a few of the risk factors that may contribute to fatal crashes:
Bus drivers may work part time and fail to maintain driving proficiency.
Using the wrong type of tires or having worn tires. Buses often veer off the side of the road after tire tread separations.
Using GPS devices meant for cars. Some routes simply aren’t designed for trucks or buses. A number of accidents occur every year when buses hit low clearance bridges.
Distracted driving including texting, eating or looking at maps.
Bus accident victims can often suffer from debilitating injuries. A bus accident attorney can take steps to investigate what caused a collision. Victims of these accidents have rights, though bus companies will often work hard to try and deny liability.
Liability In Bus Accidents
Buses are considered common carriers under the law and bus drivers are held to a high standard in terms of driving safely. Buses can be very difficult to operate and drivers should be adequately trained. When a bus veers violently off the freeway this is typically indicative of one of two things. Either the bus driver suffered some type of medical emergency or the bus suffered some type of mechanical malfunction. There are other possibilities but these two explanations account for a large number of such crashes.
Bus drivers should undergo medical examinations in order to uncover any conditions which could affect their driving ability. Similarly, there should be regular checks of the buses being used for transport and their component parts. In particular, tire tread separations can have deadly consequences for bus passengers. When a tire blows out a bus driver can lose all control and veer across lanes of traffic. Investigators will need to conduct a forensic analysis of the crash scene in order to determine the exact cause of the accident.
