Liability In Car Accidents Involving Loose Animals

Animal owners have a common law duty to secure their animals so that they do not pose a hazard to drivers. There are a few “open range” counties in California. These counties allow animal owners to let their farm animals roam freely. But in most counties animals should be secured to prevent accidents. Cows and horses should be kept behind a fence to prevent them from wandering in the road. It’s best to have two secure perimeters to decrease the likelihood of an animal escaping.

Victims of car accidents involving loose animals will be able to file a claim against the negligent owner. A person that is injured will be entitled to damages including lost wages, medical bills and pain and suffering. It’s important to seek the legal guidance of a car accident attorney after a collision. An attorney can track down the owner of the animal and help you receive compensation.
