According to KTLA, a California Highway Patrol officer was killed and another was injured when a suspected DUI driver slammed into a parked patrol vehicle on the southbound I-880 in Hayward on Sunday, December 24, 2017. The fatal car accident happened just before midnight, when a suspected drunk driver slammed into the patrol vehicle that was parked on the shoulder of the highway as they were on patrol for dangerous drivers.
Andrew Camilleri, 33, was in the passenger seat and was killed in the tragic accident. The officer in the driver’s seat, Jonathan Velasquez, sustained minor injuries and was transported to Eden Medical Center, where he was since been released. The suspected DUI driver, who has only been identified as a 22-year-old, sustained serious injuries. Authorities believe the driver was under the influence of alcohol and marijuana. Camilleri is survived by his wife and three children.
