NEWPORT BEACH, CALIFORNIA (September 28, 2018) A yoga instructor from Raleigh, North Carolina identified as Jean Trott was injured on retreat in Newport Beach when the shower door at the Hyatt Regency Hotel randomly exploded and sent shards of glass into her body.
Jean Trott said that the accident caused a loud boom as she was stepping out of the shower. The victim was taken to the hospital where it took medical staff three hours to remove all of the glass from her body. She also had to get 30 stitches.
Jean Trott was at the Hyatt Regency hotel in order to attend a yoga retreat. Staff at the hotel got another room for her family and contacted the manufacturer of the glass.
An investigation into the glass explosion accident in the hotel bathroom remains ongoing at this time.
What Causes Shower Doors To Break
An exploding shower door may seem like a freak occurrence, but it is actually a lot more common than people think. The the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has said that 2,300 people have been sent to emergency rooms from 2012 – 2016 after a glass shower door exploded. The explosions can happen for a number of reasons including scratches on the surface of the glass or installation errors.
Glass expert Mark Meshulam has said that shower doors are made from a special type of glass. Shower doors are made from tempered glass that is constructed under an enormous amount of energy. It can even be likened to a bomb. When tempered glass breaks it is designed to splinter into thousands of pieces. Manufacturing errors can sometimes cause the glass to break all on its own.
When tempered glass is made microscopic pebbles referred to as nickel sulfide inclusions can become trapped within the surface of the glass. When exposed to the heat of a shower the glass cam become unstable and break apart. There are, however, steps that can be taken to avoid being injured by tempered glass. A small safety film can be added to the outer portions of the glass. Even if it breaks it’s still contained in one piece. Victims of shower door accidents may have the ability to file a premises liability claim for damages.
Liability In Accidents Involving Shower Door Explosions
Hotels and other businesses have a duty to take reasonable steps to keep guests safe. This includes doing regular maintenance on hotel appliances and making sure the floors aren’t slick. Active hazards should be sought out and removed. If a hotel fails to install a shower door correctly this could certainly cause it to explode. Any person that is injured may seek compensation in order to cover medical bills, pain and suffering and lost wages.
Moreover, in a number of situations manufacturing errors with shower doors could cause them to break apart. If a design error or manufacturing error was the cause of the accident, victims could pursue a product liability claim against the company that made the shower glass. These types of cases can often be very complex and are best examined by an experienced personal injury attorney.
