Lawrence Verdin Merced: Lawrence Verdin Jr Died In Car Accident After Hitting Concrete Pillar On Highway 99
MERCED, CALIFORNIA (January 3, 2018) – A 43-year-old man identified as Lawrence Verdin Jr has tragically died after he was involved in a car accident on Highway 99, according to the Merced County Coroner’s Office.
California Highway Patrol are saying that the victim hit a concrete pillar that is on the outskirts of Merced. For reasons that remain under investigation, the Ford Fiesta that Lawrence Verdin was driving veered off the roadway before coming into contact with the pillar.
It does not appear as though any other vehicles were involved in the accident. The Ford Fiesta he was in caught fire after the accident. First responders attempted to pull him out, but he was later pronounced dead at the scene.
Liability In Car Accidents Involving Fix Rigid Objects
An estimated 35,000 people die every year in car accidents in the United States. It has been estimated that driver liability accounts for 94% of those accidents. But what a lot of people don’t realize is that road design can play a large role in accidents as well. Cities like Merced have a responsibility to design and maintain roads that are reasonably safe to use. Part of constructing safe roads on the highway means installing protective barriers to prevent cars from hitting fixed rigid objects like pillars.
Crash cushions, guardrails and center dividers are supposed to steer errant vehicles from fixed objects. When a city fails to install safety barriers to protect motorists they could face civil liability in the event of an accident. The family of a victim that died may be able to pursue a wrongful death claim based on California (Gov. Code, § 835). It’s important to seek the legal guidance of an experienced car accident attorney following a crash. An attorney can evaluate the specific facts of your case and let you know what your rights are.
