MARTINEZ, CALIFORNIA (November 7, 2018) A 26-year-old inmate that tragically died at the Martinez Detention Facility has been identified as Karthik Kandaswamy.
Martinez police are saying that Karthik Kandaswamy was arrested one day earlier by the San Ramon Police Department. Officers found the victim unresponsive in his holding cell around 11:27 p.m.
Medical personnel were called to the scene and began life-saving measures. But he was later pronounced dead.
An investigation into the inmate’s death remains ongoing at this time.
Liability In Inmate Deaths
Unfortunately, deaths at county jails are quite common. Police officers and jail staff don’t always fully understand an inmate’s medical needs. An inmate might be overdosing on alcohol or drugs. If a suspect isn’t given proper medical attention quickly they could go into cardiac arrest. If police officers or jail staff do not give an inmate adequate aid while they are experiencing a medical emergency they may face civil liability if the inmate dies. The family of the victim may have the ability to file a wrongful death claim for damages.
